ODE AN JANE BIRKIN

Jane Birkin. The figurehead of the Parisienne’s famous style, despite her British roots. A minimalist style, with a flirty just-out-of-bed undertone. Classic and at the same time a touch of laissez-faire. Loose and casual. You could recognise her by her wicker basket, an item she later swapped for Hermès' Birkin Bag dedicated to her. Birkin had it. Down to the last detail. She was a style icon – someone who is still inspirational to this day.

So Summum travelled to her much-loved French coastal town of Deauville, two months after her death, to enshrine the new collection for summer 2024 with her je ne sais quoi spirit. It is our tribute to her, to who she was. That fashionable seaside resort on France's Flowery Coast, where many a wealthy Parisian and high-society name owns a second holiday home and where Coco Chanel opened her first boutique in 1913, captures the imagination. The location inspired many writers and filmmakers, who saw in the beautiful coastal town full of grandeur the ideal setting for their work. And they still do. But now, what a coincidence. During our shoot on the beach, right next to us a shoot was being prepared for Chanel with great pomp, a lot of manpower and trailers. I now understand the appeal this coastal town has. It is the amazing ambience combined with Honfleur’s cute little harbour. It is the authentic elements here that make a visit special. Its beautiful nature, majestic beach, delicious (fish) restaurants, cute shops and architecture. And it’s only about a two-hour drive from Paris. Pack your bags and go, what are you waiting for?
