Annabel’s

Nightclub Annabel’s was founded in 1963 by entrepreneur Mark Birley, in the basement of London’s chique casino The Clermont Club. The reason: Birley wanted to be able to gamble and party with friends undisturbed after closing time. He named the nightclub after his then wife, Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart, a legendary beauty. The club survived longer than the marriage: Lady Annabel started an affair with Birley’s best friend, Sir James Goldsmith, whom she later married. For decades, royalty and pop stars such as Mick Jagger and Madonna, as well as world leaders such as Richard Nixon, have passed through the doors. Until things went downhill.

In 2007, Annabel’s was taken over by business tycoon Richard Caring, who moved the club two doors down and turned it into a maximalist playing paradise for the richandfamous. In 2017, Annabel’s was reopened, completely restyled as if it were the love child of designer Gianni Versace and the flamboyant pianist Liberace. The club consists of several bars and restaurants, workrooms, a swimming pool and a cigar parlour, each room even more baroque and lavish than the next. The highlight may be the Ladies’ Powder Room, a feast of shell-shaped pink sinks with taps in the shape of golden swans. Or the toilet so beautiful that requests sometimes come in for dinner there.

Annabel’s is open to members and their guests. These members form a carefully selected cocktail of people who, in the words of Annabel’s itself, ‘share a passion for the best things in life’.
