Why do French people seem to have such a fabulous je-ne-sais-quoi about them? And why is Paris synonymous with fashion? L’histoire de la mode.
There are some wonderful shops to be found in Amsterdam’s suburbs. Go to the West or East districts for shops with really surprising offers.
Just outside the centre of Amsterdam, you will find unique, small-scale boutiques. Despite the convenience of online shopping, little can beat a Saturday spent shopping, strolling from shop to shop, smelling beauty products, feeling fabrics and tasting oil and cheeses. It’s then that you find out how beautiful something really is – the feel of the leather cover on your new diary, the weight of a fresh coffee table book in your hands and the silky soft fabric of a new scarf between your fingers.
Amsterdam has unmissable shopping areas such as Gerard Doustraat in De Pijp and P.C. Hooftstraat and 9 Straatjes in the Centrum district, but the most original shops are to be found off the beaten track. On to De Clercqstraat for Misc Store, for example, to Kinkerstraat for Gekaapt and onto Javastraat or Czaar Peterstraat in Oost, where you’ll find multicultural tokos (Indonesian shops) next to trendy coffee shops and creative concept stores.
Summum as a shopping destination
Summum Woman’s home is in the heart of Amsterdam. We have the latest fashion in a stylish, historical building.
In the heart of Amsterdam, among the cosy 9 Straatjes (‘Nine little streets’), Hartenstraat 6, you’ll find our brand store. It’s a store where you can immerse yourself in the Summum feeling, between the rugged brick walls and the warm wooden floor, and under the lofty glass roof through which the daylight pours in. It is home to our entire collection, and an environment where you can feel the fabrics, come up with style ideas and try them on in your own time. You can take home exactly the pieces that suit you; pieces you can pull from the wardrobe time and again and effortlessly combine with items you already have. Comfortable and on point.
Skins Go on then, one in Centrum, in the 9 Straatjes. And it’s a must-see: Skins. Here, you will find the best beauty selection in the whole of the Netherlands, with international niche brands such as Le Labo, Cire Trudon (the oldest candle manufacturer in France), Ellis Faas (the label of the Netherlands’ biggest make-up artist) and Byredo, for example.
Gekaapt Amsterdam’s most cosy concept store started out as a sustainable touring circus, which hijacked temporarily vacant properties, hence the name in Dutch, meaning ‘hijacked’. After eight successful pop-ups, you’ll find all sorts of the fun stuff for your home, caravan or festival stand at a fixed location on Kinkerstraat.
