You won’t be able to miss it: Summum celebrates its twentieth birthday this year. So it’s party time: in stores, online and in the media. And on the shelves, too, because from the beginning of September, at the height of the Autumn season 2018, that’s where you’ll find the limited edition Summum 20YRS capsule collection. A mini-collection packed with major gems – a real celebration of the Summum Woman style that we have established so clearly and powerfully over the past two decades.
It has been one big, amazing adventure since it all began back in 1998. At the time we kicked things off in Amsterdam. The feeling of that bustling city and all the inspirational trips that we have made over the years for shoots and other reasons – you’ll find it all reflected in the 20YRS collection. The capsule is intensely romantic, sometimes a bit exciting, tough and active, but always feminine and stylish, with that extra-special spark. Made for you – it’s as simple as that. Fancy celebrating your Summum 20YRS with us? Then say cheers to another 20 years!
Fashionshoot Cape Town
Stylist and fashion consultant Simone Dernee did the styling for the shoot of the Summum 20YRS capsule collection in Cape Town. ‘It’s so photogenic out there!’
Stylist and Summum blogger Simone Dernee flew off with the photographer to beautiful Cape Town, to shoot the Summum 20YRS collection in a stunning rural location. The natural surroundings and feeling of wide open space in South Africa provided the perfect setting for the ambience that Summum and Simone wanted to create: a tad romantic, sweltering and late summer – just like days can be sometimes in September before the autumn sets in.
Simone is not unknown in Cape Town: it’s one of here favourite locations for doing shoots. Simone: ‘The weather is always wonderful out there and the people are so nice. Plus the food is amazing in Cape Town and the surrounding area is enormously photogenic. And it’s so easy to book the good people you want for fashion productions, from producers to hairstylists.’
Team Summum was also able to book a make-up artist and model right there on location: ‘We already had our eye on a couple of models while we were back in Holland. And with the casting session we did out there it was good to see some models live, which meant we were able to choose someone. But the evening before the shoot a model arrived from Germany. She made a beeline straight for us from the airport because she had heard that we were casting. Actually, she was too late, but we fell in love with her and so booked her at the last minute. The make-up person was an American who had been living and working in Cape Town for the past few months, having come for the surfing lifestyle. The surf is fantastic in Cape Town – I’m told that the waves are amazing. This particular make-up artist spends most of his time catching the perfect wave and plans his working life around his time in the water. Very relaxed.’
With the dream team in place, they travelled out to the location. Simone: ‘While we were still at home in Holland, we had given a wish-list to a location recce agency and they came up with the perfect setting: a fabulous little wooden house right on a lake. But when we got there, it turned out to be extremely hot and dry. So half of the lake had dried up and the house was no longer on the water. The leaves on the trees had all shrivelled up, the grass was dry and you could see the piles the house was built on and the frame of the jetty in all their full glory. Which was very different to what we had intended, but fortunately we could immediately see the charm of the nearby landscape, which had a wonderful atmosphere all its own.’
What you don’t see is just how tense things were at times. Simone: ‘On the day of the shoot, a neighbour happened by. He told us that he had caught an enormous snake the day before. That’s the sort of thing you don’t think about, because you can’t hear anything by the buzz of the insects and the birds whistling… but, of course, there were snakes there, too. And there we were frolicking through the long grass! So you suddenly realise that you’ve got to watch out. Luckily, everything went smoothly and I’m really proud of the result.’
