Spaces for Design Lovers

Dining out, sleeping in a lovely hotel room or being carried along in a world of inspiring art? Yes, of course, certainly if the design is right from A to Z.

Culture hub: De Kazerne, Eindhoven, The Netherlands

In Eindhoven, people are good at finding a new purpose for empty industrial premises. Just think of Strip S, the creative residential area on the former Philips site. This also happened in the district of Bergen, where an old military constabulary barracks was given a different function. A part of the premises was transformed into two eateries, fine dining restaurant Benz and the more accessible bar/restaurant Kazerne. The rest of the space was filled with hotel rooms. There are eight rooms, one of them a spacious 140 square metres, all furnished with work from young and emerging design talent. Apart from all the areas with art on show, there is also a large exhibition area with alternating exhibitions.

Museum: Musée Yves Saint Laurent, Marrakech, Morocco

In Marrakech, you do not need to search far for an inspiring interior or exterior. Take the Musée Yves Saint Laurent, opened in 2017 and an ode to the French fashion designer: more than beautiful, from the terracotta coloured building and surrounding impressive gardens to the alternating exhibitions. The designer, whose cobalt blue holiday villa is an icon in the city, once said: ‘Marrakech taught me about colour. Before Marrakech everything was black. Paris is a place for creation, Marrakech a place for inspiration.’ Tip: buy a combi ticket, for both the museum and the gardens. This will allow you to bypass the queue for the popular gardens, which most tourists want to see.

Hotel: La Granja, Ibiza, Spain

La Granja began as the showpiece of designhotels.com, a club which collects the most beautiful hotels online and later opened accommodations itself. La Granja began as a mindfulness address located in an old finca which could be hired entirely for a period of reflection. Nowadays, you can also book an overnight stay for two and enjoy a lunch. Then you will spend time in a chic Spanish traditional farmhouse with Moorish influences and a dream of a swimming pool in the centre. Thick white walls keep the heat out, dark wood and aging shades of blue and brown form the decor.

Restaurant: The Y, Moscow, Russia

The Y in Moscow the capital of Russia is the sum of taste of millennials and the popular Instagram account assigned to the stylized film sets of director Wes Anderson (@accidentallywesanderson). The two storeys of the gigantic restaurant were given a pastel coloured pallet and an eclectic mix of elements and geometric shapes. On the ground floor, a relaxed café was furnished which is aimed at young families from the neighbourhood, whilst the second floor was made more formal. Here you will find high ceilings, dome-shaped lamps and an open kitchen with metal and glass arches. The name? This refers to generation Y, the most diverse generation ever, according to the New York based design team.

Concept store: Graanmarkt 13, Antwerp, Belgium

Graanmarkt 13 is a total concept from the style books. A ‘house’ with five floors filled with ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’. This begins with a top restaurant in the cellar, with fantastic cuisine mainly based on vegetables. One floor above is the fashion and lifestyle shop of the premises, with sustainable, timeless brands, hand-picked by owners Tim and Ilse. If you don’t want to go home, you can book the apartment on the above floors, furnished by Flemish architect Vincent Van Duysen. A serene stay, like you are entering a greige Instagram feed. You can have a dance in the hearth, the food is begging you to stay at home and the bathroom is a paradise.
