Germany has trademarked the cool and slightly raw, urban style. Who are the people and what are the styles and brands that marked the creative landscape of our eastern neighbours?
To the British fashion photographer Tim Walker, magic, darkness and romance are a harsh reality. Summum Woman felt inspired by his magical work.
What is it about England? The novels of Lewis Carroll, J. R. R. Tolkien and J. K. Rowling, the iconic looks of artists such as Leigh Bowery, David Bowie, Elton John and Kate Bush and the fantastic drag appearances looks of artist Grayson Perry: is there magic in the air?
The youngest name in this fabulous artistic line-up is definitely that of fashion photographer Tim Walker. His enchanting photographs full of symbolism and sensuality play with proportions and absurdity in an Alice in a Wonderland-like way. Beautiful, often bold, distinctive models in colourful, fairytale settings, all without photoshop or other digital manipulation. Tim Walker’s wonderful worlds, just like his camera, are emphatically analogue. He wants them to really exist, if only for the models. After all, it’s all about the beauty of life and time.
Straight after finishing his degree, top photographer Tim Walker began working as first assistant to the famous Richard Avedon. He has been a photographer for Vogue since he was 25, shot campaigns for Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons and produced the 2018 Pirelli Calendar. He names the 15th/16th century Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch as his greatest inspiration. He considers the commission from the Swiss collector Nicola Erni to interpret his masterly triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights to be the turning point for his creative self-confidence. According to Walker, those fantastic surrealistic worlds are how real life is: magical and sensual, romantic and dark, just like the fairytales of the past.
In short, that clean, generic, filtered, sexless modern world would do nothing for him, and Summum Woman is happy with that. Pink is also his favourite colour: ‘Pink is so joyful, so sexual; it stands for everything that is good about life’.The classic English country estate with its fairytale garden full of wild roses, where Summum photographed the Spring 2019 collection is a typical Tim Walker decor. In such a romantic environment, your imagination simply flows. Down the rabbit hole you go.
