Wallflowers

‘To me, flowers are happiness’ – Stefano Gabbana

Designers just can’t get enough of flowers: they have presented them on the catwalk by combining past and present. The flamboyant art collector Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979) and photographer and actress Tina Modotti (1896-1942) served as muses. There were lots of voluminous proportions, with wide, straight, high-necked blouses (the ‘yoke blouse’), beautiful rose embroidery and the almost complete disappearance of the waist in Erdem’s collection. We also welcomed the maxi skirt as a garment for every occasion and for any time of day – not just for sunny summers days in faraway holiday resorts. Giambattista Valli tried another approach, with short, round mini dresses with voluminous sleeves in all-over floral print and sexy strapless ankle-length dresses with ruffles in millefleur. And to add to the glamour, the models wore bucket hats made from Chantilly lace. The gold embroidery on the matador jackets by Dries Van Noten had a vintage look due to the matte finish. There was a striking lack of high heels. Ballet shoes with platform soles, flip flops and sneakers added a loose, nonchalant feel. Wearing a washed cotton (workman’s) jacket with your floral dress creates a nice balance: charming yet trendy. Whatever you do, have fun. The more flowers, the better.
