The Italian designer Maria Manzini creates many of the prints for Summum Woman, which presents a massive challenge every season. How does she do it?
It’s all about work hard, play hard, which means that most of us have to spend at least part of the summer working. But that shouldn’t be a hardship. When the holiday peak season is at its height, life for those back at home becomes an oasis of calm. No more traffic jams, except those heading for the beach. Everyone’s happy and relaxed and in the mood for a summer of love. We do lunch outside when the weather’s fine and start digging out those exotic recipes to try. And if needs be, we even work a summer schedule, so that even the worker bees among us can still enjoy those long, sultry summer evenings. However, don’t let that great summer feeling cloud your judgment: flip-flops at work simply is not done. Not anything goes just because it’s likely to be thirty degrees outside.
Summum Studio is a capsule collection of specially designed clothes for serious work, with garments such as a sleeveless wraparound top and jogging-style trousers made from chic satin crêpe in a summer shell white or dark, sensual olive, very Amal Clooney. You can’t beat crispy white cotton for telling people you’ve got everything under control, even if that white cotton is lavishly adorned with broderie anglaise. Because loveliness is never a bad idea.
And a little bit of fashion pizzazz at work in the high summer can’t do any harm, although keep it nonchalant. Statement prints with palm tree leaves and other jungle patterns take you to exotic places, as do Summum’s favourite bohemian patchwork prints on paper-thin kaftan-like pieces. Even the smaller minimalistic and chic black-white designs have something appealingly ethnic about them. ‘The eye has to travel’ was the artistic motto of the legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland, and that’s something we agree with. Let passion be your guide and allow yourself a little adventure.
